Rev. Fernando Paiva III

Rev. Fernando Paiva III is currently the esteemed priest-in-charge at both St. James Church and its affiliate, Trinity Church in Woodbridge. Known affectionately as Father Freddie by his parishioners, he is the XXth priest to lead St. James since its founding in 1704, highlighting the church's rich history and lasting legacy.

His leadership comes at a time when the church aims to strengthen ties with its long-standing members and the local community, promoting spiritual growth and outreach. New Jersey, with its vibrant communities and diverse cultures, is where Father Freddie proudly calls home. Raised in Sayreville, his faith journey began at Holy Trinity Church, where he first felt called to deeper service within the church. This formative experience laid the foundation for his future in the priesthood. Following his time at Holy Trinity, he interned at St. Peter’s Church in Perth Amboy, gaining invaluable hands-on experience that solidified his commitment to a life of service to God and the church.

In May 2022, Father Freddie earned his Master of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary, a rigorous program that provided him with the theological knowledge and pastoral skills needed for effective ministry. Shortly after, in June 2022, he was ordained as a deacon at Trinity Cathedral in Trenton, marking a pivotal moment in his spiritual journey. Later that year, in December, he was ordained as a priest at Holy Trinity Church in South River, affirming his dedication to the priesthood and its responsibilities. During his preparation for the priesthood, Father Freddie served as deacon associate at two South Jersey congregations: Christ Church in Palmyra and Sts. Stephen and Barnabas Church in Florence. His service from July to December 2022 provided him with practical experience and deepened his understanding of parish life. The diverse challenges and opportunities he encountered have been invaluable in shaping his ministry approach at St. James and Trinity, allowing him to draw from a rich tapestry of experiences in his current role.

As priest-in-charge, Father Freddie plays a crucial role in the spiritual life of both Trinity and St. James. He offers Holy Communion at these congregations on alternating Sundays, ensuring the sacraments are accessible to all community members. On Sundays when he is absent, lay readers lead Morning Prayer, fostering shared leadership and community participation. This collaborative approach enriches the worship experience and empowers lay members to actively participate in church life.

Father Freddie shares his life and ministry with his wife, Jessica, and their young son, Bennett. They reside in the Rectory of St. James, deeply embedded in the church community. Their presence there symbolizes their commitment to the parish and allows them to engage more fully with the congregation, building meaningful relationships and fostering a welcoming environment. Together, they contribute to the vibrant life of St. James, embodying the spirit of service and community central to the church's mission.
